Onigirazu (Japanese Sushi Sandwich) Recipe

10 Minutes + 30 Minutes Rice Cooking

super easy

2 sandwiches

This Onigirazu (Japanese Sushi Sandwich) Recipe is all about epic flavors! Fresh, sliced goodness packed between crispy nori sheets. It’s like sushi met your favorite sandwich and created magic.

I don’t know anyone around me who wouldn’t like Asian cuisine, nor do I know anyone who would despise a good sandwich. And the combination of sushi and sandwich in one is absolute perfection and one of my favorite meal prep recipes.

You can cook the sushi rice ahead of time, everyone has a can of tuna, salmon or even tofu in their pantry, so it takes no more than 5 minutes to prepare this sandwich! When I’m busy, I quickly wrap the sandwich in foil and have a great go-to lunch that I could eat every day.

Directions

1.
Prepare the Rice
Rinse the rice well several times first to make the water clear. Then pour cold water over it, bring to the boil and cook for about 10 minutes. Afterwards, remove the rice from the heat, cover it with a lid and prepare a brine of rice vinegar, sugar and a pinch of salt. Gently stir it into the rice and set aside to cool.

2.
Wrap the Sandwich
Place the nori seaweed on the foil, shiny side down, place a scoop of rice in the middle, then the remaining ingredients and finally the rice again. Cover with smaller square of nori seaweed and wrap carefully - fold two opposite corners together and then fold the other two corners together, like an envelope. You can use the foil to tighten the sandwich a little, to shape it.

Notes
Use the freshest ingredients you can find, especially when it comes to the fish and vegetables. The quality of the ingredients greatly affects the taste and texture of your Originazu.
Choose high-quality nori seaweed sheets to avoid any unpleasant texture or flavor issues. Crispy nori enhances the sushi sandwich experience.
Rice Matters - Use sushi rice or a short-grain rice variety for the ideal sticky texture needed to hold the Originazu together.
Be mindful not to overstuff, as it can make the sandwich difficult to roll.
For a vegan version, use avocado, cucumber, and marinated tofu as your filling. Replace mayonnaise with vegan mayo or a creamy tahini-based sauce.
Originazu is best enjoyed fresh, but if you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Consume them within 24 hours to maintain the best taste and texture.
